The Best Domain for Your Mobile Website

January 20th, 2009

There is a fair amount of confusion and controversy about the domain name companies should use for their mobile website. Do you need .mobi? What about m. or wap.?

The answer is simple, use the same domain that you use for your primary website. Sure, this may fly in the face of what domain sellers want you to do, but from a business and consumer experience perspective, it’s the only option that makes sense. As a marketer, you spend your time trying to build a brand and hopefully people have found your website and visit as needed. Why in the world would you then ask them to remember another domain name in case they happen to visit from a mobile device?

Can you imagine if every print ad and TV spot was tagged with two different domains?

Clearly your website content must be optimized for mobile devices, but setting up a specific mobile domain is not needed. With a small amount of code on your website, site visitors are presented with the appropriate experience based on their access device.

Don’t make customers try and guess your mobile website location!
